“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” – Josh Billings.
I have been getting told lately how full my hands must be with two dogs in college. I wanted to write it down and explain while yes, I have a 100lb toddler and a 10lb sassy old man on my hands they don’t feel full. My heart does. Dogs are a blessing. They’re always excited to see you, always there for you, always depending on you. It’s ruff (haha, get it!) In the beginning when you first get a dog they are either a puppy and you are trying to train them or they are a rescue and they’re trying to figure out their new environment. Even with all the hard moments of a transition, the good always outweigh them. The saying, “dogs are only part of our lives, but we’re their entire lives,” is completely true. I first adopted Harrison over a year & a half ago he is a mama’s boy to say the least, and looks to me like I am his saving grace. A few months ago we welcomed Hank into our small family, (also major mamas boy) he is a gentle giant who thinks he is Harrison’s size, and if it were up to him he would be my sidekick to work, school, and wherever else I had to go. My dogs are my best friends because when I walk through the door every day, even multiple times a day, they are always excited to see me. Harrison does his happy dance – wide eyed and ears tucked back, while Hank wags his nubby tail and rolls over for a belly rub. When I’ve had a long day and haven’t been home, they follow me everywhere because they are just so glad that I made it home, and they are ready for an adventure to the park/ going from room to room while I get organized, or simply a snuggly Netflix day on the couch. A best friend comforts you and that is more than true with my dogs. When I’m upset or just not feeling bubbly and social, they are there for me with sloppy kisses and smiling faces. May it just be crawling into my bed with me to cuddle, or bringing me a toy to get me in a happy mood, they’re always there. I work on training my dogs, but most days I feel like they are teaching me. They remind me that unconditional love is the greatest gift, even when it seems like a bad day in the grand scheme there is ALWAYS something to wag your tail about, and respecting the needs of those I can’t truly communicate with and understand. It does not matter that they’re not human, that they can’t speak or reason, they are part of my family. When they need something it is as much of a priority as something I need. The experience of growing in life with dogs is so special. There’s so much to teach them and to be taught by them. They’re the best friends anyone could dream to have; so loyal, so loving, so grand. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.
